1. To this woman, debt problems and financial disaster are things that happen to other people, and you know, for people like that, they usually are. Its the waitress on $24k a year who will be ridden into the ground by debt, this gal will buy a home for $1m and it will triple in price and she will move on and buy a boat. Its just how life is, go big, or go home.
2. Sad how dental schools capitalize on students' belief that they will be rich and well off once they graduate. Super high prices to pay their greedy top-heavy administration. It's the American Way!!

4. Someone remembered this same lady calling back in Feb 2015. They had that much student loan back then and of course, Dave was shocked to hear the amount. Last time she asked about her husband buying a practice. Can't believe she called again. He told her they shouldn't buy a practice OR a house last time. Did she think some piddly rent increase would make a difference in his answer this time? It would have been funny if Dave had remembered her calling the first time. He would have chewed her out even worse if he'd known she was calling a second time expecting a different answer with all that debt.

6. Unbelievable! Just because your husband is going to graduate from school does not mean that you need to buy a house right away. 500K in debt and she is worrying about some rent increases. Renting is not a waste of money. This woman is trying to keep up with the (broke) Joneses.
7. Why does it cost so much to be a dentist? Something isn't right here. He must have dropped out and dropped back in a couple of times.
8. This is sadly the way that dental school is going, no matter what school dental students go to. It is a CATASTROPHE! 20 years ago, dentists could graduate with hardly any debt and make a great deal of money, but now it is no longer the case. don't pay attention to what google says for dental school debt. the national average for loan repayment based off of ADEA 2015 stats is 500,000. (around 450,000 for residents and around 550,000 for non-residents). I will be going into dental school this year and it is one of the scariest things I am facing right now. It is serious stuff guys.

What, was she expecting him to congratulate her (husband) on acquiring such a wonderful income and completely ignore the $500,000 elephant in the room? Yeah, you DO kinda' have to pay those off or it'll be with you till you die. It's a student loan...can't bankrupt that thing away.

18. She said the rent will go up and that's like giving money a way...what in the world! How is taking out an additional loan to buy a house more sensible here?!!?
19. She's laughing??? People don't seem to know what being hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt means. Even for a doctor or lawyer, that's a lot.
20. I really don't think the reality of 480K in debt was sinking in with her.
    
    I have a friend who is a psychiatrist who had 6 figure student loan debt (more than 100K, but certainly not 480k) and he did exactly what Dave said....rented a 1 BR apartment in a so-so area until he paid off the student loans. It took him about 2 years to do it. THEN, he bought a condo for himself.
