A Basic Tutorial About Investing in Silver and Gold

The Captain answers a reader's e-mail about how to go about investing in silver, gold and other precious metals. A fine introduction into the world of precious metals.

  1. Precious metals are a fucking scam. When the world collapses I don't have time to fucking determine if your coins and bars are legit. I don't carry a scale or 20 fucking chemical bottles and a 3000 page collectors guide. Buy land, cattle, and seeds. Or invest in bitcoin; banned in multiple countries.
  2. FYI Aaron, "bullion" refers to PM before they have been coined. Bars, ingots, etc.
  3. Not all nickels before 1964 are silver. Only nickels minted in the years of 1942-1945, and the composition is only 35% silver, not 90 %. unless minted in a set. And morgan silver dollars are composed of 90% silver not 75%.
  4. To check pennies just look for the dark brown ones and you will have, in most cases pre 81.
  5. Morgan dollars are 90% silver like all other traditional US silver coins, not 75% silver.  They are .7734 ounces of silver, so easily confusing.   Also pre-64 nickels are not silver, nickels have always been 75% copper and 25% nickel from the 1800s until today, except for a couple years during WWII they were 35% silver because nickel was needed for the war effort.
  6. Thx for reasoning with me... 1. How much about the current price, would you say, reflects the human energy involved to mine and market it? 2. Yes. Jewelry, electronics in trace amounts, and other lavish items. 3. But are they rare relative our population? How much is bought for uses? How much is bought for storage in a vault? 4. Works of art and houses are both bartered in the marketplace, for cash. Same goes for gold and silver. All are traded in divisible pieces.
  7. "Can anyone REASONABLY explain why gold/silver are a store of value? Human energy is the only value." 1. A lot of human energy went into finding & producing the pure piece of metal. 2. The particular metals have unique properties that render them essential for various uses. 3. The metals themselves are fairly rare relative to other metals. 4. The metals are very portable, & can be made into divisible pieces for barter. As opposed to a house or a work of art.
  8. You said your living the american dream, can you elaborate on your definition on that? I'm curious to the meaning of that in the modern age'

  13. Humans are arbitrary, Vnntbls? You may have sparked a spiritual debate. Is human history random nonsense, or does it occur in repetitious order? Maybe I should have said human energy is the controlling value, not the "only" value. The supply of PM might be an interesting discussion, too. If supply is constant, the only thing that should affect the price is human population (and inflation) Humans double every 40-50 years. Gold has grown 6 times in 13 years.
  14. Can anyone REASONABLY explain why gold and silver are a store of value? I conclude the notion is ~ 95% DOGMA. Jewelry is nice -- not saying they can't serve other utility purposes too. But these are just 2 goods in a market with infinite potential. How about we move forward? Human energy is the only value.
