A New Paradigm for Finance: David Blood at TEDxHelvetia

After 'retiring' from his role as CEO of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, David Blood set up Generation Investment Management with Al Gore in 2004. At TEDxHelvetia, David brings a pragmatic approach to the world of social finance and aims 'to encourage businesses around the world to be more responsible, ethical and sustainable.' In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  1. The reason he probably got rejected from 69 banks was because they all saw he was a blood sucking leech conman.  Nice human social engineering speech here, thank you psychology degree.  This guy sure knows how to make a killing of taxing carbon.

I feel like 20 years from now I'll be watching this speech on an episode of American Greed after this guy is given a life sentence in federal prison for fraud and scamming the american people for profit.
  2. investment industry is just about holding onto its "license to operate", but it could yet slip out of its grasp. can the investment professionals of the post-google era offer a more compelling, less jargon, more embracing opportunity to grow economies assets?
  3. "resource based economy" Isn't that what all economies are based on? Best monetary system would be a Free Banking System
  4. Social impact investment is a great concept, but it is hard to imagine high net worth investors and large mutual and hedge funds buying into it within the next 10 years. I can't see the portfolio weight of S.I. investments reaching 5%-10% as David Blood predicts. Investors and traders are hard wired to maximize financial returns at every deal and opportunity. Social and environmental issues are of as much concern to your conventional trader and investor as a shoe sale to a hippy.
  5. understanding the future of the economic system is a simple as knowing why a balloon explodes when one puts too much air in it. infinite growth = Boooom!
