Precious metals are a give and take right now, I wouldn't disagree with buying silver right now or 9 months ago, I would buy gold if you are new to investing though, and I have bought gold and gold mining stocks. Silver is more volatile than gold, so it also means it will probably outperform gold (more money on your investment). Don't blindly buy silver and expect to become rich overnight though...this is process you repeat over your life. Precious metals are only for times of uncertainty, stocks will always outperform precious metals.
