Are 1oz Silver Somalian Elephants a crap investment? Elephants v Pandas v Libertads

Was interested to note the discussion from Dec 7th Stacker hangout. Raised this question - Are 1oz Somalian Elephants a crap investment. Some interesting points including a very informative video from Brotherjohnf in Aug 2013 as he seeks to add to his silver collection. I look at a matchup between Mexican Libertads, Chinese Pandas and the elephants from Somalia to try and work out which coins we should be investing in. Interesting findings for me including that due to the low mintages the Libertads have performed well over time. Not however as well as the Elephants. Humble pie for me and hopefully useful for you. Please comment below as to your thoughts on the comparison, has it surprised you? What are you collecting?

  1. What do you think about the gold gilded versions?
  2. I think Somalia is a struggling country trying to keep their economy going.

    Thanks for the vid!
  3. I think the elephants are a hidden gem. The earlier years mintage was only 10000-20000. Buying pre-2010 is out of the question for me now. Even with current mintage of around 150000 it is still very relatively low. I have seen current year on sale for as little as $2 over spot. The fact that the 2016's are 9999 pure makes it a no brainer for me. Within 3-5 years they will easily appreciate nicely in value - can't go wrong. I kick myself for not starting to buy these by the tube 10 years ago.
  4. What do you think of buying the 2016 1oz silver panda for investment? Looks like the claimed mintage is 8 million.
  5. what crap
  6. It's all starting to make since to me. Why not just buy an American Eagle? Elephants, Kangagroos and Pandas all seem a little out of place in AMERICA, especially in New Nexico, I don't even think I've seen one of those animals. What do they eat?
  7. Glad I bought 7 of these recently..............I also like the Rwanda 1 oz Silver series............
  8. I def think the elephants r a great investment & its a great looking coin!
  9. the pandas are from africa and the chinese stole it I say that because my mum saw one when she was young in somalia and bamboos can be found in africa too not just only china.
  10. Just compare the countries...
    Oh Somalia...come on.
The coin is going nowhere just because of that.
You'd do better with almost any other coin.
  11. Good bargains are always great. All I'm saying is, China is known for selling fakes. I have seen them. Eagles, Canadian Leaf, and Pandas that are fake. All from China.
  12. There are alot of Fake Pandas coming from China. Research the company and only buy American minted coins. Have all coins from China tested.
  13. Geography plays a part as well. I couldn't sell a Somali Elephant in my region if I tried and online fees only add to the difficulty.
  14. I have a question. Yes the elephants rise in retail price, but, they are available from major retailers while the others are perpetually out of stock. My point is, I can pay and get elephants, but I cannot get older Libertads, Perth and some pandas without looking to the secondary market. I've been watching these on ebay and the they're all priced higher but a lot of the time the elephants don't sell, whereas the Perth always seem to sell and Libertads are in the middle...so just because the price rises, does it really go up in value if you don't have buyers? Just a thought and humble question.
  15. Follow my channel I stack silver bullion as well Thanks
  16. Somalian African Elephants are one of the best investment coins you can buy for close to bullion price only when they first come out for example you can get the 2015 around $20-$22 but the 2010 for example are selling for over $60-$70...so check it out over the years and let me know if these are a bad investment...
  17. My only concern with the new 2015 Pandas is that there are no markings on the coin saying it is silver or 1 oz....bothers me a little.  Otherwise, I would say a good investment for the previous years.  For me, I have not had a track record for the elephants.  I did order a 2014 and 2015 coin.  I would like to get a roll of the Libertads.  I just like them more, but that is just a personal preference.
  18. Really enjoying the comments on this video - keep them coming!
  19. I still think the kooks are the way to go...(20)2011...(50)2012...(75)2013...(100)2014.....(140)2015....you can't go wrong with kooks...I also have a (almost)complete set , can't get myself to pay 75ish dollars for a 2008 kook.
  20. Hopefully we can get you into a live hangout at some point, thanks for watching!
