Beginners Guide to Detecting Cleaned & Polished Coins 101 - Ebay Resource

Buying quality coins & currency can be quite a pain at times. Here's a nice video guide that will be part of a "clinic" series for buying and selling coins & currency on EBay. I've had over 15+ years experience buying and selling coins, and have sold and bought on EBay for over a decade. Enjoy the video and I hope this helps, the last thing I want to happen is for collectors get burned on a purchase. Check out my site for coin roll hunting success stories, tips and tricks of the hobby, and market trends: http://searchforsilverison.blogspot.com/ The best resource available for varieties is the Cherrypicker's Guide to Rare Die Varieties. I have both volumes that covers all the types of coins. I'm thankful to have found this book and have fun finding valuable varieties that I sell and make lots of money on. 1. I have bought several Morgans and Peace dollars. They were very dull and hazy looking. I handle them in my sweaty, oily hands for a while and they look much better. Is this bad or considered cleaning ? How can you tell if a coin has been rubbed by a cloth ? I'm new to coin collecting.
  2. New collector, thank you for this!!
  3. New sub here, thanx for you honesty. Cheers
  4. T H A N K YOU !!! WE, THE PEOPLE SO APPRECIATE YOUR "UPLOADS".
  5. Good information for the beginning collector. I wish I had seen this video 50 years ago. One negative, stop moving the camera. Mount the camera and move the coins. This would improve the quality a great deal.
  6. ugh too much information that I already know and not good info on the topic
  7. Do you really think that Morgan would not get a details grade?
  8. acetone cannot react with silver. If you soaked the Morgan in acetone for 10 seconds or more you may find the tar substance will dissolve. Soak more until it is gone. The acetone cannot remove surface metal and cannot change luster. Prove it to yourself by using a lesser coin first.
  9. Video very helpful! I have a 1925 Stone mtn. coin that I received from my father in his estate. He was a collector for 50 years. I recently took my coin to a supposedly reputable dealer .Dealer said it had been cleaned in the past. I can see some areas of sheen, especially on front soldiers leg and America on reverse. From my fathers records he bought it in 1972. paper holder has CHBU. My question is if it was cleaned 40 years ago is it still devalued? Dealer offered $12.50.
  10. What's your thoughts on ICG?
  11. What if someone used an ultrasonic cleaner? It should preserve the coin, but get rid of the grime.
  12. Pardon my ignorance. But what's the big deal about purchasing an old coin that has been cleaned?
  13. I'm kind of new at this. So coins that have been cleaned are devalued?
  14. I love this video. I have been collecting for a while, and this maybe the best resource I have ever read/seen on detecting cleaned coins. Every numismatist should watch this, be they beginning or with 20+ years I the hobby.  I love the various examples.  I will be sharing this with other collectors I know.
  15. good video man, really helpful...should have more likes by the viewcount!
  16. Great video. Thanks
  17. I NEVER buy "raw coins" on EBAY or from a Online Dealer.... due to the fact that anyone can take pictures of whizzed, cleaned, dipped coins .... hold coin at different angles  cast light on coin take picture the photo fix the coin make it look like real good "untouched" coin when you paid high Dollars for a coin find out it was cleaned ..... I only buy certified coins from PCGS/NGC online..... only raw coins I'll buy is from a local coin show, when I can examining the coin in person.... I been collecting coins for over 20 years ....
  18. Thanks for video. Was looking for more info into this. And have tons of questions about coins etc. So many errors on pennies and etc. What's a good site to go to for beginners. ? As I'm now coin roll hunting with a little silver luck. But probably missing so many error coins. Please help.
