7. Summary: Can a mutual fund be a bad investment? it depends on it's history and performance. Like buying a home. Is the home a good investment? Well is the home in a good neighborhood? Close to work, stores, bus stop, schools? Is the neighborhood run by HOA?

9. To underscore Dave's point... I have two retirement accounts both have mostly the same mutual funds, and opened at the same time (one is a rollover IRA, the other is a Roth). One is up over 13% the other is only up 1.57%... the difference?
   
   in one fund I have more money in a mutual fund that is down than the other, and it messes up the average.. in the other fund I have more in three funds that are over 25% return...
   
   I'm still hanging on to the fund that is down though, because you don't jump off a rollercoaster, that's how you get hurt. I picked the fund based on it's track record and I believe it will return.

11. I'm confused as to why George Lopez is calling in and telling us he is someone else? Either way, I'm always annoyed how Dave tells people to take care of finances but then he tells people to buy mutual funds. Mutual funds are average at best. Sure, the market does grow on average, when it does poorly you most likely do too. At the same time, I manage over 150 portfolios and not a single one is less than 20% growth already this year and it is only February. If you aren't actively managing your own portfolio you are losing a lot of growth.

14. If they are growth stock ones that have given less returns than value stocks in the long run.
