On previous episodes of Closing the Gap: Futures Edition, we've discussed how the later dated prices of futures contracts (compared to the current priced contract) can provide trading opportunities that reduce cost basis and increase duration. Today, we apply this same concept to Copper, /HG. At present, the curve is in contango, meaning that front month contracts are trading at a discount to later dated contracts. The curve allows traders to set up Calendar Spreads involving two or more expirations. This way, traders are making an assumption on the spread's price movement, rather than a directional play in Copper.
