After 67 years of the same dollar bill design, the United States issued brand new currency notes beginning in the year 1996. By the year 2000, most all of the old bills were destroyed and removed from circulation, replaced with the dramatically redesigned $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 bills that are used today. The government did this in order to deter counterfeiting.
