Bitcoin is anonymous like the internet is anonymous; It is called pseudoanonymous. Just like you could create an anonymous email account and send an anonymous email, you could send an anonymous bitcoin using various methods. There are still ways law enforcement can find you because your IP address is publicized when using bitcoin. Bottom line though, smart users can stay essentially anonymous but law enforcement is constantly finding ways to violate people's privacy, so it's a cat and mouse game.
