Financial Literacy: Mellody Hobson at TEDxMidwest

Mellody Hobson, President of Ariel Investments, delivers an energetic, thought provoking "Talk" that inspires the audience to determine their own financial destiny. Coming from a not so stable home environment, Hobson's ascension in the academic and business worlds offers a clear example of what's possible when one decides to want more for themselves in life. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  17. Here's a quote for you Mellody.  Fortunately it is not from Cosmopolitan magazine…
"Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realize we cannot eat money."
    -Cree Indian Proverb
  18. Sorry Mellody but the stock market is Las Vegas on steroids.  Convincing simple Americans to gamble their hard-earned money with you and your Republican friends is the greatest scam of all-time.  They chose you to be their salesperson because you have an amazing story of poverty pulled up by your bootstraps.  If money were the purpose of life, you would be a deity.  But thankfully it is not.  What your brilliant speech fails to address is the reality of what your Crony-Capitalist world on Wall Street has to offer all of us simple folks, busting our ass to make you people rich. The Sistine Chapel is art sweetie, not commerce.  And all of the "branded entertainment" that your generation of Harvard/Princeton/Yale grads infected Hollywood with wreaks of the lack of risk taking that you claim to hold so dearly to your heart.  Your life is so risky that you are now marrying the richest film geek who is 25 years your senior and just happens to own Hollywood.  Very risky move indeed.  Why can't anyone else see through this vail of lies?  Because they won't turn off their TV sets and end the psychotic obsession for money, power, greed, materialism, and lies.  Sorry but I'm not buying what you're selling.
  19. why does everyone clap when she says she's getting married, but not when she's listing her achievements?
  20. Amazing!
