1. 5.75% fee? What a fool.
2. I have the exact same situation, but it IS my fees that caused me to be negative (for 2016). For 2017 so far, I am in the positive.
3. Do your own due diligence on your investments. He could have high bond percent. Only he can answer the question as to why he's down himself by looking at allocation.
4. Heck my 401k says +47.08% for 2016.
   
   Emerging market index fund +6.97%
   international index fund +2.11%,
   bond index fund +1.93%
   Small cap index- +17.79%
   Large cap index +12.00%
   Self direct +53%
   Roth IRA is close to the same.
   Was a good year. All green.
   Finished contributing to 2017 Roth IRA yesterday.
5. if you invested in bonds or international markets, you lost money. if you invested in US stocks (SP 500), you would have made money
6. Sounds like this guy drank Dave's koolaid. Dave's ELPs are crooks. No need to pay for expensive ELP when you can buy your own mutual funds thru a low cost online brokerage.
7. I have a S&P 500 index fund in my traditional IRA. I plan to leave it to charity.
