But you can improve your retirement readiness. For younger people, especially, it’s critical to save more now, to leverage the power of compound interest. (1) If you have a 401(k), be sure to invest at least to the company match, but try to target a savings rate of 10 to 15% per year of what you earn, if you can. (2) Make sure your savings are invested appropriately for the long term. Although you can’t control market behavior, you can build the potential for long-term growth into your portfolio and outpace inflation through your investment choices. (3) Be realistic about when you’ll retire. The longer you can wait, the more time you’ll have to build savings. (4) If you’re near your retirement, consider the positive impact of working a little bit longer before retiring.
