Trading Academy: Real Estate Investing Vs The Stock Market Thinking about jumping into the real estate investing business? While I certainly have nothing against real estate (I invest in it myself), is it really practical for someone with very little start up capital? If you listen to the real estate gurus they will lead you to believe "no money is required", but is that really the truth? How far can $1,000 in real estate go vs. $1,000 within trading the stock market? I examine these issues. 1. for those that miss it, you can start with 2k and make money,  real estate you need more in most case second,  you either get the deal or don't.     in stock  if wallmart goes down to 60 a stock and you belive it will go back to 80, you can buy all of the stock you want inless you are dealing in billions.  so you can make money on stock with out having a lot.

  5. in the market you get trade fees, data fees, platform fees, have to pay for internet, office stuff etc.  Then you have to compete against computer algos that are rigged to take your money, HFTs, fight to get order filled etc.  Sure you can pay an extra .10 cents but every time you do that with 1,000 shares its $100 every single time, thats a lot of gas to drive to look at properties.  If you trade actively you might do that hundreds times a month.  Then you have to worry about news, bloggers putting out pump or hit articles that can affect prices and trow charts out the window, etc.  Also trow in risk of intraday halts when you get stuck in position and can't buy/sell/short/cover= 0 liquidity= at mercy of market.  List keeps going on and on.  Only real advantage trading stock market is majority of the time you can get in/out of your position quickly and get into cash vs real estate you need to find buyer/seller which takes  time.  Also in real estate you have a much better idea what your investment is worth, you won't buy unless you know you can sell it for more.  With stock you might buy a company because of whatever reason and then they PR revised estimates and you lose 70% of your $ when stock resumes trading.  You left a lot out of the equation.
