6. For anybody interested, I have calculated how much he would have today had he bought gold at (roughly) the same times:
   
   Beginning 1973 $6,000 @ ~$70 = ~85ozt
   August 1987 $46,000 @ ~$480 = ~95ozt
   December 1999 $68,000 @ ~$290 = ~234ozt
   October 2007 $64,000 @ ~$800 = ~80ozt
   
   At end: ~494ozt + 40,000 in the bank
   spot price today:$1120
   
   $553,280 + 40,000 = $593,280
   
   Worth noting is that Bob reinvested his dividends, had a 0.2% expense ratio from 1972-1977 and the Vanguard 500 fund afterwards. I am assuming Bob is sticking it under his mattress, and so no storage fees that would apply if he kept it somewhere safe.
