Here’s what I’m talking about: Principal #1 for investing for dummies is to keep a proper perspective on money. While your goal is to make money, it is very easy to become obsessed with it. Understanding that money in and of itself is an inanimate object and has no worth other than what we give it, an obsessive pursuit of riches can bring some adverse problems for some people. Many people have sacrificed their health, their family relationships and even their dreams to pursue money. According to motivational speaker Peter Lowe: “Most of America’s millionaires made their fortune not by running after profit, but by throwing themselves into work they adored. They viewed their work as a mission, and riches became a byproduct.” Making an investment into your passion will keep your perspective of money noble. So what is your passion? If you can answer that question and find a way to market your passion to others who can benefit from your knowledge and experience, you could do very well. However, it is always wise to keep your emotions out of any dealings with money. Be clear eyed about your pursuits, keep your wits and your integrity about you at all times, don’t be sucked into the “get rich quick” schemes that are out there and you should be fine. Principal #2 for investing for dummies is to invest in yourself through education. To earn you need to learn! Have a good solid basic understanding of what is an IRA, Roth IRA, annuity, term vs whole life insurance, etc…. Find someone in your area who has the heart of a teacher. Seek out an adviser that will teach you how to make your own financial decisions not make them for you. Ben Franklin once said “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.” Always, always keep learning. Principal #3 for investing for dummies is to find a mentor and be teachable. For this step, you need to find someone who already did what you want to do or is doing what you want to do. This is not only from a professional perspective but also personal point of view as well. There are many people that are already successful at what you’re pursuing. To be mentored by someone who is like minded is a sure way of becoming successful. It could be someone you may never meet personally but who has published books and/or sells training material. It has been my experience that I have achieved far more seeking wise counsel and patterning my behavior on those who are already successful than I could ever have accomplished on my own.
