Just How Small is an Atom?

Just how small are atoms? And what's inside them? The answers turn out to be astounding, even for those who think they know. This fast-paced animation uses spectacular metaphors (imagine a blueberry the size of a football stadium!) to give a visceral sense of the building blocks that make our world. Lesson by Jonathan Bergmann, animation by Cognitive Media.

  1. Saw 2 helium isotopes... He He...
  2. 2:30 mega stone
  3. Grapefruit, blueberries, marbles and cars? WTF? Bizarre, non-intuitive and disorienting choices for analogous units of measurement (chosen for this very reason). Also, why does the horribly-animated cartoon astronaut have to be such an obnoxious, condescending asshole? Is he a metaphor for TED?
  4. If it's so small then how people discovered it?
  5. "Vast regions of empty space"
  6. 2:26 MEGA...EVOLUTION!!!!!
  7. set this at 0.5
    ur welcome
  8. I freeking love ted ed
  9. I bet this guy likes common core also.
  10. Best one 👍
  11. The human population in 2012 was 7 billion, not 6.2 billion. Also, didn't give a thumbs up for the English units.
  12. You can't (and don't) avoid infinite regress (of idea) by invoking the CONCEPT of "smallest possible particle".
An "atom" is more like a lively knot of whatever "space" is than it is like "Tiny Object".
Understanding this shows the falseness of the idea that (objects are "made" of smaller(discreet objects))
There are no actually existing, discreet anythings in the whole of actual empirical reality.

A knot in a piece of fabric is A FUCKING PIECE OF FABRIC.
  13. This is really helpful ty bro
  14. The model of the atom as displayed here is wrong. Electrons are in a field and are not confined to a single location until observed. Also the orbital is circular and has 3 electrons which is impossible because the only orbital with the field shape of a sphere is the S orbital which may only contain 2 electrons.
  15. Someone stole your video to a big page on facebook without a permission.

  19. am i a bunch of atoms learning about atoms
  20. boring video to be honest
