ParotidHemangioma

A clinically useful sign to make out Parotid hemangioma is presented in this case report. Pressure on the internal jugular vein will cause increased pressure in the veins within the parotid gland. If a hemangioma is present within the gland it will be engorged. Since the Parotid gland is enclosed within a capsule and is contained within the investing layer of the deep fascia of the neck; the engorged hemangioma will stretch the parotid capsule. Hence the outline of parotid gland will be distended on compression of internal jugular vein. This sign is useful to differentiate a hemangioma placed within the gland from that is outside the parotid capsule like one that is in the infratemporal fossa.
