Land is considered highly speculative and rarely produces any profit. You can't depreciate land on your tax return. 2009-2012 was a great opportunity to purchase real estate at lower prices. Now the prices are going back up in most major cities. The combination of lower interest rates and lower home prices make rentals a good investment. Whether RE is a good investment may depend on where you live. When you first start out you'll want properties close to where you live.
UK has no tax on land. You do have to do upkeep though, However it is really hard to purchase land in the UK. Small country high population. Unless you want to buy £50,000+ then you will pay a significant premium.
