When money isn’t real: the $10,000 experiment | Adam Carroll | TEDxLondonBusinessSchool

Adam Carroll talks about his $10,000 Monopoly game with his kids and how to teach finance management in a cashless society. Adam Carroll is quickly being recognized as one of the top transformational trainers in the country. Having presented at over 500 colleges and Universities nationwide, hundreds of leadership symposiums, and countless local and regional organizations, Adam Carroll’s message of Building A Bigger Life, Not a Bigger Lifestyle has been heard by over 200,000+ people. In early 2014, Adam successfully crowd-funded a documentary on student loan debt, raising nearly $70,000 in 45 days. The film, Broke Busted & Disgusted is due out in early 2015 and is already garnering critical acclaim. The mission of the film is to start a national debate about changing the way we fund college and not crippling 20 somethings with mountains of debt. Adam’s core message is we are all after the same thing – to relentlessly pursue our passions, live simply and happily, and make a difference to those around us. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

  1. Glad that first joke went over so well.
  2. lets just say I'm under 18, any habits or things I should automatically commit to memory or rust useful tips?
  3. Hmm. "Kids these days"? Nah. I remember this very same, exact, to the letter, not 'new' at all concept back in the 80s. I'm sure it goes back farther that that, but I'm too young to vouch for that as I was 6 when I first heard about kids not treating money like it's real - on very special episode of a sitcom involving credit cards. And this very old information will be retread as 'new' when it comes around again for the next generation. And the generation after that. Always claiming "Kids these days!" because we so conveniently forget that we were once exactly like them, and our parents taught us this exact same lesson that we're pretending we invented for our own kids.
  4. Really what an awful man and what unfortunate children. The ignorant rich, ruling the earth, ruining the earth.
  5. Next time use gold and silver coins.
  6. Damn, wish my parents would give me food, housing, and $50 a month.
  7. gta 5 does teach you saving skills though...unless you are an idiot and pay real money for shark cards to get instant gratification. however you play right and do missions or races, and heists. Just buying one super car takes hours of play, and you learn quickly to not waste money to get the thing you desire. it may not be real money but games do teach you that you cannot have what you want right away.
  8. why would u not buy every property u land on
  9. Why do they use $ in London?
  10. I've had this same idea, because I see kids in my grade spending out their ass every time they go somewhere.
  11. In fairness, how old is this guy?
The value of money does decrease a lot over time.

He is probably overvaluing $100k, even if they're undervaluing it.
  12. That whole speech just to state the obvious. Thanks for wasting 15 minutes of our time.
  13. Money is an abstraction, and the real-life consequences will persist until we all realize this
  14. What I learnt was that if you give otherwise nice, caring people real money they turn into selfish assholes.
  15. He covers an important subject, but its very easy, and well understood. People act different with games because there is nothing to win other than fun and experimenting with how different things plays out.

Anyway, another throw away line that doesnt really matter, but biometrics are not the future. They are deeply flawed.

But in general its a good talk!
  16. "We just want them on the board with us"
Er..did he not catch the importance of that point?
  17. Incredible. Really eye opening
  18. Rich kids
  19. The thing is, if my mom gives me money ever, I never spend it. The only time I may spend it is if I am with friends.
  20. geezus! :)
what connected to me is that you dont tell kids exactly what to do, you create situations so they can ecperience and learn themselves
